Conde Nast named Charleston the top U.S. city for the 8th consecutive year in a row. Readers of Southern Living picked Charleston as the South’s best city and Travel + Leisure Magazine named Charleston its No. 1 U.S. city for the sixth year in row. Not to mention, Charleston was the only U.S. city to make the cut for Travel + Leisure’s list of the World’s Top 15 Cities, coming in at No. 10.
Living in one of the best cities in America can be a blessing and a curse, since I kind of just want to keep this gem all to myself. On the other hand, I’m proud of my city and not a day goes by that I don’t get asked where the best spots are to live & raise a family for those contemplating the move. Who can blame them? Beautiful weather, even more gorgeous beaches, amazing renowned cuisine, a deep rich history, and the best southern hospitality found on this side of the Mason Dixon line. It’s no wonder the masses are flocking to Charleston and development in the area is booming like never before.
While the low-country can seem small, it’s actually chock full of options when it comes to choosing where you want to live. The latest 5,000 acre development in Summerville, named Nexton, is definitely the first stop you’ll want to make in your new home search and I was lucky enough to get an insider’s look at the all impressive modern amenities and upscale homes that make up this hot new community. A place where work and life come together in an almost seamless way.
Homes for every shape + size
No matter what your lifestyle, season of life, or size of your family, Nexton has a housing option to fit you. From rental apartments or townhomes built for one to single-family homes and even a Del Webb community for those 55+, they’ve truly got you covered.
The first stop on my visit was to the model home gallery where I was able to tour show homes from each available builder. Although they all were beautiful, I gravitated to Ashton Woods and Saussy Burbank. Pulte Homes, David Weekley, Homes by Dickerson, and True Homes also build in the community, so there’s lots of variety. Among all of the home builders, the price range started in the 200’s and capped around 500. Of course, depending on what options you choose, I suppose you could easily exceed that if the sky was the limit and you truly were looking for that custom build. I give more of a first-hand account and detailed home tours on stories, so be sure to follow along on insta to check them out. I’m still drooling over the attention to detail on some of those. You can also see more available homes or specs to build your own on Nexton’s site.

Live, Eat, Work, Play
The Nexton community is much more than just homes. Residents will soon be able to walk, bike, or golf-cart their way to Summerville’s hottest new shopping and dining destination: Nexton Square. A 10-mile network of trails and sidewalks will connect the homes to all of the amenities and retail areas, allowing homeowners to live, work and gather without ever getting into their car.
So what exactly is it? Nexton Square is a 140,000 square foot dining-anchored center and will be a walkable, urban setting featuring a number of Charleston’s renowned restaurants such as Halls Chophouse and Taco Boy. It will also have abundant outdoor dining options and a reputable mix of restaurant, retail and services.
In addition to the square, the Nexton community is also home to local businesses like Rainbow Childcare, SCRA, Carolina Ale House, Starbucks and coming soon are Baker Automotive, Hilton, MUSC, and many many more. There truly will be no reason to ever leave “home”, as they like to say. An urgent care, full fledged hospital, fertility specialists, child care, an elementary school, a swim club, office space, vb various hotels, a retirement community, an array of dining and shopping options and the living arrangements to fit your personal preference from apartments to single family dwellings – it’s truly a new take on being right at home.

Well, if I haven’t convinced you yet that Nexton is the latest place to be, maybe this will do the trick. Their inaugural summer concert series, Sounds on the Square, in partnership with the Town of Summerville, is set to kick-off on June 21st and be held every other Friday through the rest of the summer! Bring a chair or blanket to kick back on and enjoy food and drink from some local fellow Nexton food trucks.
That’s the thing: With it’s immense size of over 5,000 acres, you can imagine how much green space there is in the Nexton community. As I was driving through the home sites, it was apparent that the developers took great care in leaving enough open space to be experienced by all ages. I alway feel like there’s something to be said about a careful consideration to keep bits of the local habitat for all to enjoy.
If you’d like to learn more about Nexton, be sure to stop by the Greeting House and go on a tour! They even have a lifestyle director whose sole responsibility is the fun, wellness, and enjoyment of those who live in the community and who can help with any questions you have about living here. It’s truly an incredible place and I just want to thank the Nexton team for taking the day to show me around!
